What kind of bass strings should I get?
I've been playing bass for almost two years, and I've been avoiding getting new strings, which now I need terribly. I have a Laguna LB224, and I seriously have no idea on what kind to get. So it'd be great if you'd have some suggestions.
The type of strings you get depend on the style of music you play and how much you want to spend.
If you're playing modern rock, progressive, or funk you'll probably want to get round wound strings. My favorite brand is Dean Markley Blue Steels and SR2000's, but RotoSound, D'addario, DR, Fender all make fine strings. There are others, but those are the ones I have experience with.
If you're playing country, jazz, or soul, you'll probably want to look at flat wound strings. These are more mellow strings with fewer harmonics and more fundamental. Everyone mentioned above with the exception of RotoSound (as far as I know) make flatwounds.
Then there's the choice of gauge.
Most players use .045 to .105 or .040 to .100. If what you've been playing is comfortable to you, then stay with that guage. If you change guages, then the instruments intonation will need to be reset.
If you've never changed out the strings yourself, get and experienced player to show you how. Or, take it to a music store and get them to show you how to do it. Some of the smaller shops will do it for free if you buy the strings there. I think Guitar Center will charge you $10 to do it, but consider it an educational cost. If you don't string them up correctly, you'll have tuning problems and possible string breakage. At $20-$30 a set, you don't want to be breaking them!
