What clarinet mouthpiece is best for an advacing player?
I want to start private lessons soon. I have been playing for over 4 years and I have the generic mouthpiece that came with my student model Yamaha 250. The main problem I have in my playing is with my embouchure..I bite down too hard instead of tightening the corners of my mouth and my tone is overly bright and not very rich. It's become a really bad habit. What mouthpieces would be best for me?
Honestly a mouthpiece is a mouthpiece and it is not the mouthpiece that determines your embouchure and playing it is you personally. If this is the problem you have you should start with something a little bit closer to the beginning student model, so keep the one you have. However you need to practice on breaking your habit. Make sure you are sitting up straight and holding your clarinet out in a 45 degree angle. That will improve a lot more than you then. Then take your upper lip and sort of push it back to avoid the over-biting. Keep practicing at it and it will become better, practice for at least 20 minutes a day. If you don't have the clarinet with you, pretend you do you and put your mouth in the correct position and blow constant air. This will help you get over the break and take away some of the overly brightness of the sound.
