For many transition metals, the size of the anion has an inverse relationship with the free energy of hydration. This can effect to energy levels of the outer electrons of the metal.
For some compounds, the ease of oxidation of the anion has more to do with the color. For example, Copper (I) chloride is white, but turns light green upon oxidation in the air. Copper (I) bromide is white, turning blue-green, while Copper (I) iodide is white turning tan or brown on oxidation.
