Yes, the Squire and Epiphone are both good options but here is something else you might want to consider. Schecter is closing out several of there models right now. This model was recently marked down from $299 to $199. I had never owned a Schecter but heard good things. When I saw the C-1 Classic get marked down from $799 to $499 I jumped on it. I was expecting to get $799 worth of guitar for under $500 but boy was I surprised. I got more like a couple thousand dollars worth of guitar for under $500. I swear this thing plays like a top of the line PRS. I can't really say anything about the 006 model since I haven't played it, but if it is even close to the C-1 it will be incredible. I also own a really nice 1997 Squire Pro Tone and a custom Epiphone Gold Top, but the Schecter puts them to shame.

Now on to the drum kits. A full kit can cost as little as $400 and as high as anyone is willing to pay. I have almost $10,000 in my current kit and it is no where near being the best money can buy. A $500 electronic kit will not sound as good as a $500 acoustic kit since lower end electronic kits synthesis sounds using oscillators. But, once you get up into the high end kits the sounds are actually sampled real drum sounds that will sound better than an acoustic kit. You are looking at thousands of dollars to reach that level though. The reason I say they sound better is because they are real drums, but tuned and recorded by professional drummers and engineers using mics and effects that cost more than most of us will ever be able to afford.
