What do I get: mandolin, or 7-string guitar?
I was going to buy a 7 string guitar, but I just figured out about mandolins. Which one should I get, in your opinion?
Are you a guitarist? If so, the 7-string will probably easier to get going with. My understanding is it's tuned like a normal guitar, just plus a lower string. A mandolin, though, is tuned in fifths, like a violin. You'd have to learn a whole new set of chords.
The other thing is that they have totally different sounds. The 7-string extends the range of the guitar down; the mandolin, on the other hand, is much higher. Do you want a dark, low sound or a bright, high one?
