What strings and style of an acoustic guitar gets a solid low pitch sound?
I've been playing guitar roughly 6-8 months, and I'm curious as to what kind of strings and model of guitar (Looking to get a Taylor guitar, I read that these are great, and my favorite guitarist/singer uses one) get a low pitch sound, or if anyone has any recommendations as to what kind of strings or guitar to get in general to get a very smooth sound. If you can help, thanks.
Well, unless you're talking about de-tuning or alternate tunings, all guitars are going to be able to hit the same low notes. I'm going to assume you want one that has more body/fuller tone at the low end. Every guitar is slightly different, so I'll just make some general observations.
First, a larger body guitar like a jumbo or dreadnought will usually be capable of more volume, especially bass. Check out the Gibson J-200. Heavier low strings will also give a more full low sound. Most brands have a "custom" set with light high strings and medium lows.
Taylor guitars are noted more for their twang and ability to cut through the mix. They are great guitars, but not especially noted for having good bass response. Of course there are exceptions to this, but the "Taylor sound" that attracts artists is more about treble. I thought I wanted a Taylor until I tried a Martin.
I ended up with a Martin D-35 which is one of the more bassy models. It has lighter bracing which allows the top to vibrate more than other models. In fact many Martin owners criticize the D-35 as having too much bass. Of course you and I know there is no such thing!!
Depending on your budget, you might look at the Martin D-16 series. They are priced similarly to the Taylor 400 series. You should really try both a Taylor and a Martin at the same store if possible...that's what turned me into a Martin owner. Epiphone makes a J-200. I haven't tried it, but if it has similar sound to the Gibson, it might be worth a look.
Remember that what ever guitar you get, heavier gauge strings will give more bass response. as will a stiffer pick. Don't take my word for it...go to a store and try them in person. Happy hunting!
