Do you need fingernails to play finger-style steel acoustic guitar?
I heard that it's preferable -if not required- to have longer fingernails to play the nylon/classical guitar, but it's not required to have them for the steel string guitar. Whenever I use my fingernails for fingerstyle on the steel-string it creates a very tinny sound that I don't like.
I preferred the sound I got when I played with nails. I have very strong nails, so breaking was never an issue.
What became an issue was I kept gettin em caught on everything, scratching my girlfriend, and she thought they were gross.
So, I cut them thinking that it was going to ruin my sound. But actually, with practice and changing my technique a bit I'm very happy with the sound I get just using flesh.
If you want to play with just flesh, it'll be fine.
