What does the symbol with a HALF moon and a star hanging on the bottom of it mean?
I found a symbol and it has a half shaped moon with a star hanging on the bottom of it, and I was wondering what it meant.
The Ay Yıldız is commonly regarded as a symbol of Islam, however, since the symbol was never used by the Prophet Muhammad, many people disregard it. It is the traditional insignia of Constantinople (Istanbul) of the Byzantine Empire which eventually ended being the Ottoman Empire.
The origin of this symbol is dubious but it is thought that the city of Constantinople was dedicated to Artemis whose symbol was the crescent moon; after Rome embraced Christianity, the star of the Virgin Mary was added. this symbol is common in Greek Orthodox Churches. When the Ottoman Empire conquered Constantinople it took this symbol and it's flag and spread it throughout their Islamic empire.
