instead of zither pins...?
For Science Olympiad I have to make a musical instrument. I'm thinking I'm going to make a Hammered Dulcimer, but I have a problem. I found some instructions online, but it said to use zither pins (tuning pins) which are made specifically for musical instruments and in the guidelines for this event it says no tuning pegs (pins, same thing). So I need to find something that will work just as well, but normally you wouldn't buy at a musical store (like not specifically made for instrument building) thanks!:)
Try using a wood screw with a string sized hole drilled near the screws head and perpendicularly through the shank (the part of the screw's shaft that has no threads). Pass the string through the hole and let the string wrap around the shank as you tighten the screw. Use a screw with threads as fine (close together) as possible to minimize the amount of up and down movement of the string as you turn the screw.
I forgot to mention a hint for drilling the string hole. File a flat spot on the shank where you want the hole to be. It will be a lot easier to keep the drill bit from drifting off center. A drill press and machinist vise would also be helpful if you have or can get access to these tools. When selecting your screws be sure you don't buy stainless steel screws. They would be very difficult to drill through. Also try to use a miniature lag bolt or a screw with a hexagonal head so it will withstand repeated tunings without stripping out the screw head.
