What is the difference between high-quality and low-quality land?
I'm writing an essay regarding the pitfalls of commercial farming and came across an article discussing the loss of high-quality farmland. While I think the terms most likely refer to soil fertility or something similar, I'm still a bit confused. Could someone help me out with the specifics? Thanks!
If you're considering the quality of farmland, then obviously the most critical factor is soil fertility. However there are other factors which may also come into play: depth of topsoil, elevation and slope and ruggedness of the land, whether the land is cleared or not, irrigation facilities and average rainfall per season, amount of sunlight year-round, average temperature per season, existence of pests or plagues etc. etc.
