What is high school band class like?
Hi, I'm just writing this question to get an idea of what school band class is like, particularly in high school. I am not new to music, I have been learning latin hand percussion, such as congas, which are usually used in latin music (much harder than it sounds) for several years, but I have never been in an actually school band class except in EARLY elementary school, which I won't count. I would like to learn the percussion section in band class next year in my freshman year of high school, so I will be starting in the novice band, at a completely beginner level. But all my friends tell me band class sucks and they will be dropping out of class as soon as middle school lets out. What will I learn next year if I do this class, specifically in percussion, but just in general? Should I pick an alternative class?
high school band -- more at high school percussion -- is amazing...everyone should get a chance to be a part in it...its very fun...anyways...
during marching season, if you guys have a marching band at your high school (usually in the fall once school starts),
you can get a chance either to be in the drumline, which usually most often consists of a snare line, tenor line, bass line, and a cymbal line. this is better for people who are really good at playing drums (mostly snare or tenor) and consistent with not only basic rudiments and advanced. cymbals at our school is easiest...you don't really need to know much about percussion to play these...but need rhythm.
There's also usually a front ensemble, or pit, section here too.
You can play on marimbas or xylophones mainly here...you would need to know how to play piano or know the basic layout of it, and how to read notes. There's also a few auxiliary percussion parts too, usually. these are for people who haven't yet been "good enough" to make the other parts....no offense to anyone.
