Why does a mandolin have eight strings?
I know that a mandolin comes in four pairs of strings. I'm guessing the strings come in pairs to make tremolo picking easier since a mandolin cannot hold a note very long. Or is there a different reason for having eight strings?
They are paired that way because each in each pair the strings are an octave apart. Therefore when you play you actually play the same notes in different octaves at the same time.
