I used polyurethane to refinish a birds eye maple hollowbody guitar, how to i get the finish to be smooth?
The guitar is a archtop hollowbody that is over 60 years old. I have refinished before but i have never done a woodstain or used polyeurithane. I need to know how to get the surface to feel smooth, because it looks fantastic, and i have enough coats down for it to be finished.
A good varnish job requires about 3 coats. Coat, lightly sand with 240-grit sandpaper till smooth, recoat, lightly sand with 240-grit sandpaper till smooth, and then a final coat. Make sure the room is dust free and you remove ALL sanding dust before applying the polyurethane.
You can thin out the polyurethane with the appropriate thinner (read label on polyurethane) and that will quicken dry time and reduce the chances for airborne dust and debris to stick to the finish before it dries. Unfortunately, it's thinner and does just that - thins! So, you may need additional coats as a result.
If a finish is done the right way then you shouldn't need to use wax, rubbing compound, or superfine steel wool to bring out the shine. Those products are cheats for people who didn't do it right the first time.
