I have a Sugar maple that the top is dead. What should I do?
Last year, the top of my sugar maple had no leaves. I called my local nursery who said to be patient because we had a extremely windy season. This summer the tree appeared the same. When I examined the tree branches towards the top recently, they were definetly dead. (A top branch broke easily with no sign of green whatsoever.) when I called the Nursery I was advised to cut off the top and it may re-crown. My tree is about an inch and 1/2 diameter and roughly 8 to 9 feet. Has anyone had success with this same situation as far as a tree recrowning. I have not cut it back yet. I have wanted this tree for such a long time, I want to try to save it yet have a nice appearance.
Sorry to give you bad news but your tree will never be the same again. There is no such thing as re-crowning. If you remove the dead( which you should do) and if that dead part was the original trunk, then that part will never re-grow. What will happen is the branches toward the top of the tree will begin to grow more vertically and one or more of them may become dominate. Your tree may look great and you may be very happy with the new look, but it will never have the same strength against storms and ice as previously.
