Can I install a tremolo system on a Michael Kelly Patriot Phoenix?
It's an arch top guitar and I was thinking about installing a tremolo system on it. I just wanted to know if it was even possible and if so the procedure I would have to go through. I don't want it put on if it's going to damage my guitar though.
This guitar is essentially a Gibson Les Paul design. A Bigsby system would work with a minimal amount of installation. There would be some screw holes from where the unit is mounted and the tailpiece assembly would need to be removed. Keep in mind that a Bigsby tremolo would not give you a lot of pitch travel so you could not get the "dive bomb" effect.
Another possibility would be the Kahler tremolo unit that would replace both the saddle and bridge on the guitar. It also requires routing a small area directly beneath the tremolo to accommodate the tremolo mechanism. The routed area is about 2 inches square and a half inch deep. This is an irreversible procedure. I have a Kahler unit on an ESP Les Paul custom that works flawlessly and I am very happy with it. This installation should only be done by a qualified technician.
