How do I take a stubborn screw out from a guitar (Stratocaster) pickguard?
I'm doing a little bit of a guitar project and I'm duct taping the top of the pickguard. There's one screw on the pickguard that's being really stubborn and doesn't want to come out. The other screws look fairly new, so it's probably not rusted, just overtightened. It would be the very highest screw hole, next to the middle and bridge pickup. Thanks!
James, since this is just a small metal screw that passes through the plastic pickguard to be then secured only by the wood base, your difficulty in removing it is a bit strange. What many times happens is the threads in the wood get stripped from over-tightening, and the hole must then be doweled to allow for a new thread to be formed by the screw. My guess is that someone had previously damaged the threads, and decided to fix it by simply gluing the screw in place. Try placing a drop of naptha or mineral spirits on top of the screw, to see if that will break any bond that has formed between the screw and plastic. Make sure the screwdriver you are using is properly-sized for the pickguard screw, as you do not want to destroy the cross-recess in the head; loosen using an even and firm turning pressure, and make sure to replace the screw once you get it out!
