Improvised Violin pickup?
Hey, as a curious/time-killing project for the week I've decided to construct an electric violin. I plan on just making a simple set up, solid body, but I was wondering about making my own pickup. I've seen the professional pickups you can buy, where the wooden bridge has a piezo element inside of it serving as a pickup. I was wondering if anyone knew if I could, or even a place with a guide, that would tell me how to construct my own bridge with a piezo (from radioshack) slipped inside of it. Would I be able to make the bridge thick enough to house it? I don't have much prior violin experience, I actually play guitar, but I'm curious whether or not I could do this.
Do you mean one of those piezo buzzers from Radio Shack? I've made pickups from them. I removed the plastic housing and glued the element to a much more compact piece of wood so it looks like a Dean Markley.
I actually tried mounting one on a normal acoustic violin and it sounded horrible. I tried moving it all around the body and bridge. All treble, and screech. (It sounds pretty bad on my guitar too.) Since you'll have a solid body, your only option for the piezo is on the bridge. A violin bridge is quite thin...something like 1/8" (although the base is wider) so you can't embed a Radio Shack piezo in it....they're way too bulky. My suspicion is that if you tried constructing a thicker bridge, it wouldn't resonate enough for the pickup to work. I would try gluing it onto the backside of a standard violin bridge. The tops of bridges are rounded to the correct radius for bowing the strings. so if you construct your own, be sure to get that right. (same goes for the finger-board)
You might have better luck using an old magnetic guitar pickup if you have one. If you want to really get into the DIY thing, try winding your own! All you need is a magnet and a lot of thin wire. I once scavenged enough wire by un-raveling some old transformers.
