I already play piano, will it make it easier to play violin?
I have played piano for about 7 years and am quite good, but I'm looking at playing the violin next. Will playing the piano make it any easier to play the violin? Or will it not matter because the violin is a string instrument and completely different? Thanks!
Mechanically, probably not. Handling a bow and the fingering is a completely different beast on a violin than on a piano, and overall simply playing a violin is harder in the beginning. (It takes more coordination to work a bow, though there isn't nearly as many notes to worry about.) However, 7 years of piano means that the mechanics is really all you need to learn; unlike when you first learned the piano and were slowed by the fact that you were also learning to read notes, rhythms, etc. and didn't have such a good understanding of how music works, the only thing that will slow you down is the unfamiliarity of the instrument itself.
