Are there any advantages to using a medicine bottle guitar slide over a regular store bought glass tube slide?
I was wondering if there are any advantages to these because expert slide guitarists use these. The early slide guitar players such as Duane Allman had them on hand, but newer ones such as Derek Trucks prefer the medicine bottle slides over the store bought tube slides. If there are any advantages to these slides, what are they?
There are different tones due to the weight of the material. I use a chrome plated spark plug socket, it fits well and has unbelievable sustain, although a little hard to control due to the weight. I messed around with different things because the store bought slides I found were too light and made of cheap glass. I'm sure there are good ones out there, I just never found one that sounded and fit good for me. I saw Slash play some pretty good slide with a bic lighter once, so experiment with it and have fun, you'll find the slide for you eventually.
