Would it be a waste to put gold lace sensor pickups on my squire affinity strat?
I want to improve my squire but I don't want to spend the money if they won't help. I am also getting a MIM stratocaster soon but I want both guitars to be good to play on. I play mostly blues and rock, blues like John Mayer. Thanks for any help.
Hi! The answer I would offer is no, it would not be a waste; however, there are caveats to this response. The Gold Lace Sensors are certainly nice pickups, but they are specifically wound to produce a tone that is more reminiscent of the 50’s Stratocasters (think early Ventures). Adding a little overdrive seemed to make mine sound brittle and harsh (typical of many out-of-the-box Fender pickups), which is not what you want for blues or rock. Should the Lace Sensors be your pickups-of-choice from the myriad of pickups available (my favorite is the Dimarzio Virtual Vintage Series at http://www.dimarzio.com/site/#/pickups/ ), I would recommend you taking a look at the Silvers (see http://www.lacemusic.com/electric_pickups/lace_sensor/lace_sensor_specs.php ). I used these in all three positions of a past-owned Stratocaster Ultra, and was very pleased with the resulting tones. For economy-of-scale, you should retain the original Squier pickups to swap back, just in case you would sell your guitar in the future. Unfortunately, having upgraded pickups in a Squier instrument has little effect on overall value, and you would be better off selling them separately if needed. Best regards, Dana
