why are my oboe reeds cracking?
i have been playing oboe for almost 5 years, but for the past year my reeds have been cracking within the first week. i live in an extremly dry climate, but i soak them every time i play, i have talked to several people but nobody seems to have a answer. i usually play on duste reeds but have tried many others of various strengths but they all keep cracking. PLEASE HELP!!! thanks.
I presume you've investigated all other possibilities, like accidental damage? Are you storing the reeds in some different way that might be allowing damage? Have you just lucked out and gotten several reeds lately that were prone to cracking?
If you are certain that the humidity is a problem, you can buy humidifiers for your instrument case--guitarists and violinists often use them. It might be good for your oboe as well. You can pick one up from the link below for $5 to $12 plus shipping--I think the ones for violin would be more likely to fit inside your oboe case.
