The strings on my violin bow keep breaking?
Okay, so I go to open my violin case and every time I do this, there's more strings broken off from by bow. Is this fixable? Or should I just get a new one? If so, how much do they cost? Thanks!
Well, first off, they're not really strings -- they're hairs. I'd first figure out whether you have horsehair or synthetic hairs. Secondly, I'd see whether the little knob you use to keep the boy it the case is rubbing the wrong way against the hairs. Thirdly, I'd see whether all the hairs are coming off in the same place -- middle of the boy? by the frog? at the tip? If it's by the frog, then something is wrong with how they've been affixed. If they're breaking in the middle of the bow, the hairs are worn out. If at the tip? same problem as with the frog. If you have a decent bow, then getting it rehaired is the answer -- anywhere from 40 -100 dollar depending on your area of the country. If your bow is complete crap and you want to upgrade (and you want to continue playing for some time) a good bow might be anywhere from 200 - 1000 dollars. If you have some time and a little money saved, I'd look into Coda bows -- google them and see what you think!
