Can a 60 WATT bass amp drive a 8ohm 15" speaker?
I have a 60 watt combo amp that I can use the power section to drive a seperate cab. was looking at getting a 15" 8ohm speaker. no will this amp work? The amp states that the speaker needs to be at least 4ohhms. But I want to be sure that I will drive it enough for me to hear
Clearly 8 ohms is more than 4 ohms so the impedance will be OK.
At 8 ohms the power will be less than 4 ohms, so it will not be as loud as the same speaker in a 4 ohm version. It will be plenty loud enough to hear though! (although not enough for use on a large stage with a metal band!)
Look at the sensitivity figure for the speaker - the higher the better. High power (400W) 15" drivers tend to be lower efficiency. Best bet for bass guitar would be about 100W and choose one specially designed for bass guitar if possible, the signal from a bass is quite difficult to handle.
If the speaker in your combo is 8 ohms also, you could drive both the internal and the new 8 ohm external speaker. Connected in parallel they give the 4 ohms needed.
